The Irish Academy present ‘The OA’ star Patrick Gibson with the Rising Star Award in association with the Irish Film Board

Rising Star Winner Patrick Gibson
The 2017 IFTA Film & Drama Awards which took place last Saturday, April 8th at the Mansion House, Dublin honoured the very best screen talent of the past year with top prizes going to ‘A Date For Mad Mary’ and ‘Vikings’, and Ruth Negga and Colm Meaney taking Best Lead Actress and Actor in Film Awards.

It was Patrick Gibson however, who took the much coveted Rising Star statuette on the night, in the hugely competitive category he shared with Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk), Peter Foott (The Young Offenders) and Seána Kerslake (A Date For Mad Mary).

He now joins a hugely impressive line-up of previous award winners; Stephen Fingleton (The Survivalist), Sarah Greene (Penny Dreadful), Jamie Dornan (The Fall), Gerard Barrett (Smalltown), John Michael McDonagh (Calvary), Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina), Tom Moore (The Secret of Kells), Michael Fassbender (Assassins’ Creed) and Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn).

Gibson broke into the international acting scene with force very recently with his leading role as Steve Winchell on hit Netflix series ‘The OA’, which has been renewed for a second season. In an interview with IFTN earlier this year, he talked us through how he first came to know the character of Winchell and how he instantly connected with him:

“As soon as I read the scenes for the audition I knew it was something different. There was such a subtle life to Steve even from the few pages; it's hard to say why or for me to analyse it but instinctively he felt like a living, breathing person. I put the audition on tape and sent it off the same day.”

He has also recently been cast in the upcoming Fox feature film adaptation of Alexandra Bracken’s trilogy of novels, in a project entitled ‘The Darkest Minds’. The young star has again taken a leading role as Clancy Grey, the son of the American president at a time when 98% of all teenagers and children have died, and those who survive are kept in camps to control the psychic abilities they have acquired since the outbreak of the disease.

More upcoming work for Gibson includes John Ridley series ‘Guerilla’ and ‘In a Relationship’ (Sam Boyd), in which he stars alongside Emma Roberts (Nerve).

Earlier work shows his steady dedication to crafting a career in film and television alike, with credits in ‘What Richard Did’ (Lenny Abrahamson), ‘Sherlock Holmes and the Baker Street Irregulars’ (Julian Kemp), ‘The Tudors’ and ‘Gold’ (Niall Heery).
