This bumper year for Irish Film has seen standout titles such as ‘The Young Offenders’ punch above their weight at the box office, with a range of home grown films yet to screen to Irish audiences before the New Year.
We run through the line-up of Irish films releasing in the coming weeks, set to contend with huge international titles such as ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ on November 18th, in which our own Colin Farrell stars.
Michael Fassbender also takes the lead in ‘Light Between the Oceans’ releasing this Friday November 4th, directed and written by Derek Cianfrance. Paddy Breathnach’s Cuban drama ‘Viva’ is also currently available On Demand to Irish audiences from Virgin Media.
Moscow Never Sleeps
Johnny O’Reilly directed his own IFTA-winning script in this project, which examines five interwoven lives in the Russian capital. It has previously screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival and Galway Film Fleadh. ‘Moscow Never Sleeps’ is co-produced by O’Reilly and Katie Holly (Love & Friendship) and releases to cinemas on Friday, November 11th.
South
Gerard Walsh is the Irish Writer/Director behind this feature drama, which sees ‘Red Rock’ actor Darragh O’Toole star as Tom, who searches for his estranged mother following the death of his father. Matthew Toman (Urban Traffik) produces the title, which screened at Galway Film Fleadh earlier this year. ‘South’ releases to Irish cinemas on Friday, November 25th and is a self-distributed release.
Crash and Burn
Seán Ó Cualáin directs this sports biography exploring the career of Ireland’s infamous Formula 1 driver Tommy Byrne, with a script from David Burke (Rás Tailteann - Rothaí an tSaoil) who also produces. ‘Crash and Burn’ is distributed by Wildfire Films and will release to Irish cinemas on Saturday, December 3rd.
I Am Not a Serial Killer
Billy O’Brien’s supernatural thriller focusing on homicidal teen John Wayne Cleaver is adapted for the screen from Dan Wells’ 2009 novel. ‘I Am Not a Serial Killer’ also represented Ireland at Cannes this year, SXSW and BFI London Film Festival. It also received three BIFA nominations just this week, for Best Screenplay, Best Actor (Max Records) and Best Supporting Actor (Christopher Lloyd). This film releases to Irish cinemas Friday, December 9th.
