Filmmaker Sarah McCann has been appointed head of section of creative media at Dundalk Institute of Technology.
The DKIT lecturer, and former programme director for the BA in Video and Film Production, has been lecturing at the college for over nine years.
An independent documentary filmmaker in her own right, McCann has had her work screened in festivals in Ireland and the US.
Her credits include the BAFTA-winning animation ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’, on which she served as production and post-production manager. The animation aired on Channel 4, and picked up the BAFTA for Best Children’s Animation in 2002.
Her recent credits include the 2011 short documentary ‘A Pedigree Performance’, which she directed and edited. The film screened at the Fastnet Short Film Festival, as well as the Boston Irish Film Festival and the Signal Film Festival.
Another short documentary which she directed and edited, ‘Ocean Ambition’, screened at the Wee Adventure Film Festival last year. The film follows a young Irish rower on his attempt to become part of a world record-winning team, travelling across the Atlantic Ocean.
DKIT, which provides a range of courses in film production, is meanwhile continuing with its guest lectures and workshops.
Next month (March 4), director Marian Quinn will be on campus to deliver a two-week long intensive directing module, while production designer Fiona Daly will return in April to deliver a week-long intensive production design module.
Recent filmmakers who hosted workshops at the college include John Murphy, editor of the recent IFTA-winning documentary 'When Ali Came to Ireland', who visited DKIT on February 19, and DoP Fergal O’Hanlon, IFTA-nominated for ‘Lorg na gCos - Súil Siar ar Mise Éire’, recently delivered a three-week long cinematography module.
DKIT students’ films also continue to screen at festivals around the country, such as Sam Banahan’s short film ‘Marionette’, which will screen at the Belfast Film Festival in April. For more information on all DKIT courses and events, see its profile on IFTN.
