Production is currently underway on a new Irish drama ‘Black Ice’, shooting on locations in Sligo and Leitrim. Directed by Johnny Gogan, ‘Black Ice’ is produced by Nicky Gogan and marks the Irish producers’ first foray into fictional filmmaking having previously scored hits with feature docs ‘Pyjama Girls’ and ‘Seaview’.

Set in rural Ireland, the romantic-drama follows Jimmy Devlin, played by ‘Love/Hate’ star Killian Scott, and his oftentimes complicated relationship with girlfriend Alice Watters, played by newcomer Jane McGrath (recently seen in Little Women at The Gate). The story unfolds against the backdrop of the local street racing scene where Jimmy is considered “top dog” among the petrol heads, and his struggle to break into professional rally driving.

The script for ‘Black Ice’ is written by Johnny Gogan (Mapmaker, The Last Bus Home) and Brian Leyden. Production began early February and the four week shoot wraps mid-March. Locations include Sligo’s Strandhill beach and many rural roads of Dromahair Co. Leitrim.

Speaking about the story, writer/director Johnny Gogan said, "the film is set in 2008 and present day. It's a contemporary story that's about post crash Ireland where our central character, Alice, is trying to pick up the pieces.

"It's particularly fitting that the way we are making the film, combining new filmmaking technologies with the ethos of Studio North West, reflects this aspect of the story."

Crew includes music video director/cameraman Peter Martin as DOP on his feature film debut, costumes are by Amy O’Hara and production design is by Tracey Walsh, also working on their first feature. Sound is by Richard O’Connor.

Speaking to IFTN, producer Nicky Gogan described ‘Black Ice’ as a “brilliant rollercoaster” praising the 30-strong crew and local community in Dromahair for their unyielding support of the project and “tons of goodwill.” Scenes in the micro-budget feature depict thrilling high speed race sequences with local car enthusiasts Richie Irwin, Noel Crawley, Terry McDermott, Shamie McGuinness and Andrew Trotter performing white knuckle stunts for the feature. “In addition to fixing the crew’s cars and everything else,” says Gogan of the talented natives, “it’s amazing how people have really got behind the project, the racing forums around the country are buzzing with news about the film.”

Nicky Gogan, Johnny Gogan and Trevor Curran are producing ‘Black Ice’ independently through Still Films and Bandit Films (with some development support from the IFB). The team are also making use of the Studio North West collective, a group of local filmmakers who are campaigning to increase filmmaking activity in the area. In addition to Gogan, Patrick O’Rourke (Ghost Patrol) and Niall Flynn (Toys in the Corner) also operate from the Studio NW base.
