This year the Portobello Film Festival is celebrating it’s 10th Anniversary, running from the 4th to 21st of August the Festival is the UK public’s first opportunity to see more than 500 brand new films.
The Irish screenings will take place on the 5th of August 2005 at the London Westbourne Studios. The evening will culminate with the world premiere of Colin Downey’s debut feature film ‘Paranoia’. This is Colin’s first feature film in a trilogy that is almost complete.
In 2004, Colin won the Cinematography award for Ivan Kavanagh’s feature ‘Reflections’, therefore the Portobello Film Festival insisted they be the first to screen Colin’s new feature film. The film features a cast of unknowns that include Irish actors Rachel Rath, Gerry Shanahan, Aisling Bodkin, Brazilian Rodrigo Rodriguez, Sweden’s Bibbi Larsson and French Soazig Metrope.
‘Paranoia’ evokes the insular world of a young disturbed woman who has closed herself off from society. Jennie is pregnant and believes that the baby was fathered by an unseen spirit that she calla Kim. Jeanne’s mother is terrified that her daughter is going mad. As Jeannie’s doctor struggles to diagnose her illness, her obsessive behaviour worsens and Kim’s influence starts to become malevolent.
A screening of Thomas McCormack’s 80 minute documentary feature ‘The Call To Fatima’ is another highlight of the evening. This film tells the story of three shepherd children who saw the Virgin Mary and an angel appear on several occasions. It was made with full approval from the Fatima shrine and the Vatican.
