Liam Cunningham cast in new Netflix sci-fi series 3-Body Problem
02 Nov 2021 : Nathan Griffin
Actor Liam Cunningham
Game of Thrones star Liam Cunningham is one of 12 actors to be announced as part of the leading cast for Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi series 3 Body Problem.

The series is an adaptation of Liu Cixin’s sci-fi trilogy, which is being handled by Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss who serve as the executive producers and showrunners on the new Netflix franchise. Alexander Woo (The Terror: Infamy) will also feature as writer and executive producer alongside the GoT duo.

Cunningham is joined by fellow Game of Thrones alumni John Bradley in the shows cast alongside Benedict Wong (Dr. Strange), Tsai Chin (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), and Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver).

Other cast members include Sea Shimooka (Arrow), Jess Hong (Inked: The Brokenwood Mysteries), Jovan Adepo (When They See Us), Saamer Usmani (The Mauritanian), Marlo Kelly (Dare Me),  Zine Tseng (The Mauritanian), and Alex Sharp (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time). No details have been release as to who each of the actors will portray on the series.

According to Deadline, 3 Body Problem is a dramatic series inspired by Liu’s epic science fiction trilogy, which tells the story of what happens when humanity discovers that we are not alone in the universe. The first book tells the story of Ye Wenjie, who, following her father’s death at the hands of the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution, attempts to help aliens invade Earth, while different factions on Earth plan different ways of welcoming the extra-terrestrials.

3 Body Problem is the latest major budget project announced by Netflix in an effort to reaffirm its position in the streaming world, as competitors such as Amazon, Apple, and Disney, continue to step up their presence in the SVOD market.

Back in 2018, the Financial Times reported that Amazon had attempted to secure Liu Cixin’s trilogy for close to €1 billion, which begs the question as to what Netflix actually paid for the rights to the best-selling sci-fi series. It is also estimated that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have been paid in the region of €200 million to bring Cixin’s world to Netflix.

Executive producers on 3 Body Problem include Bernadette Caulfield (Game of Thrones, The X-Files), Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, and Nena Rodrigue for T-Street Productions. Other executive producers include Lin Qi and Zhao Jilong of rights-holder, The Three-Body Universe, Rosamund Pike and Robie Uniackeare for Primitive Streak, and Plan B Entertainment. The series is being co-executive produced by series director Derek Tsang.

Speaking about the lead creative team of Benioff, Weiss, and Woo, Netflix VP of Original Series, Peter Friedlander said that the trio “have experience tackling ambitious sagas over time and space, as well as executive producers Rian Johnson and producing partner Ram Bergman (Looper, Knives Out, Star Wars), who have long dazzled fans with thrilling and mind-bending epics.”

Speaking about the series, writers and executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said: "Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe. We look forward to spending the next years of our lives bringing this to life for audiences around the world.”

Author & consulting producer, Liu Cixin added: "I have the greatest respect for and faith in the creative team adapting The Three-Body Problem for television audiences. I  set out to tell a story that transcends time and the confines of nations, cultures and races; one that compels us to consider the fate of humankind as a whole. It is a great honor as an author to see this unique sci-fi concept travel and gain fandom across the globe and I am excited for new and existing fans all over the world to discover the story on Netflix.”
