BBC Four Acquires Gilbert O’Sullivan Documentary
23 Aug 2011 :
Gilbert O'Sullivan: Out on His Own
RTÉ Arts Live documentary ‘Gilbert O’Sullivan – Out On His Own’ has been acquired by BBC Four and will air on Friday 26th August at 20.50. It is the first RTÉ Arts Lives documentary to be broadcast on the UK channel.

Produced and Directed by Wildfire Films’ Adrian McCarthy, the 52 minute documentary follows Irish-born singer Gilbert O’Sullivan, who once topped international pop charts, but now, in relative obscurity, continues to tour and record. The documentary was acquired by BBC Four from sales agent RTÉ CEL, who look after international sales of RTÉ programmes. RTÉ CEL liaises with international broadcasters to distribute Irish content internationally. The project was fully commissioned by RTÉ.

‘Gilbert O’Sullivan – Out On His Own’ is a portrait of an outspoken music man who refuses to retire, absolutely certain of his own value, ready to take on all detractors and critics as he continues to pursue the sort of success he once achieved.

The series filmed for six months in 2009 and saw Adrian McCarthy following Gilbert O’Sullivan to places such as Israel, Nashville, London and Ireland, as he continues to pursue a career in entertainment. Camerawork on the series was done by Adrian McCarthy, Ronan Fox, Emmet Harte and Sean O’Driscoll. Executive Producers on the documentary are Martha O’Neill and David McKenna and it was edited by Brenda Morrissey. The documentary originally aired on RTÉ in April 2010 and has since screened at the Stranger Than Fiction Festival at the IFI, Dublin (2010), Guth Gafa International doc Festival (2010) and Branchage Int’l Doc Festival (2010).

Catch ‘Gilbert O’Sullivan – Out On His Own’ on Friday August 26th August at 20.50 on BBC Four.
