‘Frank’ to have UK Premiere at Sundance London
24 Mar 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
The 2014 Sundance London program of features, panel and short films has been announced. Running 25-27 April in the capital city’s O2, the 3rd Sundance London is set to feature top independent films from the famous Utah Sundance Film Festival alongside live music, panel discussions and special events. This year, 21 feature films and 18 shorts will be screened at the film and music festival.

‘Frank’ is among the features to be screened. Lenny Abrahamson’s fourth feature met raving reviews and was acquired for distribution in the US at Sundance. The film stars Domhnall Gleeson and Michael Fassbender as members of a very alternative band. The feature is an Element Pictures/Runaway Fridge production for Film4, BFI, Protagonist Pictures and the Irish Film Board.

‘Frank’ was produced by Ed Guiney, David Barron and Stevie Lee, with executive producers Tessa Ross, Katherine Butler, Andrew Lowe and Nigel Williams. The film is written by Jon Ronson (‘The Men Who Stare At Goats’) and Peter Straughan (‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’, ‘The Men Who Stare At Goats’). Music is by Stephen Rennicks and the feature co-stars Maggie Gyllenhaal (‘The Dark Knight’).

‘Frank’ has already screened at a number of international festivals, including the Berlin Film Festival and SXSW, Texas. Sundance London will see the film’s UK premiere, and it will be released in Ireland this May. A trailer for the film was recently released.

Director Lenny Abrahamson, whose past features include ‘Adam & Paul’, ‘Garage’ and ‘What Richard Did’, the latter of which was last year’s biggest IFTA winner, will attend the festival and will be one of the panellists for the ‘Guts to Glory: How do you Find your Story?’ event. Abrahamson will be joined by Marjane Satrapi (‘Persepolis’, ‘The Voices’) and Ryan Coogler (‘Fruitvale Station’) in the in-depth panel on case studies of how to get a film from script to screen.

Last but not least, Irish short ‘The Last Days of Peter Bergmann’, will have its UK premiere at Sundance London, screening four times in total between the 26th and 27th April. The 20 minute long IFTA-nominated short examines Peter Bergmann who, in 2009, claimed to be from Austria when he arrived in Sligo town. During his final days, Bergmann went to great lengths to make sure no one ever discovered who he was and where he came from.

The director of the film, Ciaran Cassidy, is an Irish documentary filmmaker and screenwriter. His documentary ‘Collaboration Horizontale’, a film about the shaving of a prostitute’s head in Chartres, screened at the 2011 Telluride Film Festival and won the director a prize at the Palm Springs International ShortFest. Cassidy’s first full-length screenplay, 'The Domestique,' recently received development funding from the Irish Film Board.

The 2014 Sundance London runs 25-27 April. Individual tickets go on sale this Friday.
